When used is the smart buy
For most contractors and dealers, a well-inspected used machine delivers the best value per dollar. If your country allows machines of the relevant age and you have a credible condition report, you capture most of the working life at a fraction of the price. Used is especially strong for proven, simple machines — backhoe loaders, standard excavators, compactors — where parts and service are easy.
When new is worth it
Choose new when your destination enforces a strict emission tier (EU Stage V, EPA Tier 4), when used age limits would block the machine you want, or when uptime and warranty matter more than upfront cost — for example on long government or mining contracts. New also avoids inspection-failure risk at the destination port.
The rule that catches people out
Age is measured from the year of manufacture, not the year you buy. A 2017 machine bought in 2026 is already 9 years old — over the limit in several markets. Check the age against your destination's cap before you commit, and remember some countries also tax older machines more heavily even when they're allowed.
